Ensure Youth Have an Ally in the Justice System
Many youth experiencing homelessness face legal hurdles – from lacking identification to having a criminal record that hinders jobs or housing. YES connects youth to free legal services through partners such as the Community Law Center. Pro bono attorneys visit our drop-in (or accept referrals) to assist youth with critical issues: e.g., expunging minor criminal records, resolving old fines or warrants, understanding tenant rights, and navigating family court or foster care matters. We host periodic legal clinics (including virtual consultations when needed) so youth can get advice in a familiar setting. By addressing legal barriers – securing IDs, clearing records, advocating in court – we help young people remove obstacles that would otherwise stall their progress. Our partnerships with legal nonprofits ensure youth have an ally in the justice system when they need it most.
